You can spend months planning an exhibition, invest thousands in a stand, and have a great team ready to go.
- Then the doors open.
- People walk past.
- The conversations aren’t quite where you’d hoped they’d be.
And at the end of the show, you’re left wondering why the stand didn’t deliver more.
The interesting thing is that poor exhibition performance is rarely caused by one big mistake. More often, it’s a collection of small issues that quietly reduce engagement, limit conversations and make life harder for your team.
The good news?
Most of them are relatively easy to fix.
Whether you’re using a custom build or an older stand, regularly check its performance to unlock surprising improvements.
Here are seven common exhibiting mistakes we still see on exhibition floors, and some simple ways to address them.
1. Your Stand Entrance Feels Like a Barrier
We’ve all seen it.
A reception desk placed directly at the front. Product displays blocking access. Furniture creating an invisible “wall”.
Visitors naturally avoid spaces that feel difficult to enter.
Quick fix:
Stand back and look at your stand from the aisle. Does it invite people in, or stop them approaching? Creating a welcoming open entrance can dramatically improve footfall.
2. You’re Trying to Say Everything at Once
Many exhibitors understandably want to showcase the full breadth of their business.
The challenge is that exhibition visitors make decisions quickly.
If your graphics contain too much information, people won’t stop long enough to read it.
Quick fix:
Focus on one core message. If someone walks past your stand from 10 metres away, they should understand who you are and why you’re different within seconds.
3. Your Hero Message Isn’t Clear
Often the most important message is buried beneath logos, product lists and supporting copy.
Visitors don’t need your company story, they need a reason to care.
Quick fix:
Lead with the problem you solve or the outcome you deliver. Keep it simple, visible and instantly recognisable.
4. Your Traffic Flow Hasn’t Been Considered
A stand can look fantastic on a 3D render and still create bottlenecks when hundreds of people are moving through an exhibition hall.
Poor traffic flow often leads to crowded areas, missed opportunities and awkward conversations.
Quick fix:
Think about how someone enters, explores and exits the space. Every design decision should support the visitor journey.
5. Storage Was an Afterthought
Nothing damages a professional-looking stand faster than boxes, coats and spare literature appearing in corners by lunchtime.
It happens more often than people think.
Quick fix:
Build storage into the original design conversation, not the final week before the show. Your team will thank you on day one.
6. The Stand Works for Visitors, Not for Team
Your team could be spending eight hours a day on that stand.
If demonstration areas are cramped, meeting spaces are awkward or equipment isn’t easily accessible, performance inevitably suffers.
Quick fix:
Design around both audiences. The best exhibition stands support visitors and the people working on them.
7. There’s No Follow-Up Plan
This is often the most expensive mistake of all.
Great conversations happen during the show, but leads lose value surprisingly quickly if follow-up is delayed.
Quick fix:
Decide before the exhibition exactly how enquiries will be captured, assigned and followed up. A successful show doesn’t end when the hall closes.
A Better Question to Ask
Instead of asking whether your stand looks good, ask whether it’s helping you achieve what you came to the exhibition for.
- Generating leads.
- Starting conversations.
- Launching products.
- Building relationships.
The most successful stands aren’t necessarily the biggest or the most expensive. They’re the ones designed intentionally around commercial goals and visitor behaviour.
Sometimes a few strategic changes can deliver better results than a complete redesign.
If you’ve used the same stand for several years, or you’re preparing for a busy exhibition calendar, it may be worth stepping back and reviewing how effectively your asset is performing.
